Our Project: Plane X Pavilion

Plane X Pavilion is an interactive aviation-themed attraction for both visitors on the ground and plane passengers in the sky.

It consists of 4 main zones: 

​

(1) Plane X Tail Pavilion, a tail shelter with an infinity mirror. 

​

(2) Plane X Wing Pavilion, a wing structure with a dome and rest areas. 

​

(3) Plane X Head Pavilion, an arch structure with terminals where visitors can customize their messages onto the interactive display. 

​

(4) Plane X Interactive Display, a projector screen with pressure plates for site visitors to interact on and LED light strips.

Project Abstract

Our project aims to transform our site, the plane spotting site at Changi Business Park, into an interactive aviation-themed attraction for both visitors on the ground and plane passengers in the sky through architecture and an interactive message display. The design approach was a concept of an user journey experience with transience to experience GLOW2.0 temporarily at the moment through 3 main segments of Inform, Communication and Engagement with different applications of light interactions. We achieve our design through an architectural abstract of a plane and an interactive message to bring in a unique experience of novel bonds through architecture and light within the plane spotting site.

Interaction and Journey Flow

Visitors would enter Plane X Pavilion via Plane X Tail Pavilion. At the pavilion entrance, they will be greeted by a large infinity mirror. The infinity mirror is made up of a 2 way mirror on the inside followed by the LED strips on the 3D printed casing accommodating it and lastly a 1 way mirror. When light is emitted within the space, some light passes through the 1 way mirror while some does not which gets reflected within into the 2 way mirror giving an illusion of an infinity into the mirror.

Next, the site visitors would enter the next attraction zone, Plane X Wing Pavilion. The overall structural design of this pavilion resembles that of the aircraft wings. At the centre of the wing pavilion, there is a dome frame with coloured membranes. During the day, sunlight illuminated on the dome would result in the formation of coloured patterns at the centre of the Wing Pavilion, where visitors can rest at the nearby rest areas. In addition to the central rest areas, visitors can rest at the tunnels located at either end of the wing pavilion which doubles up as paths for visitors to walk through.

When the site visitors pass through the arch structure at Plane X Head Pavilion, the lights inside the arches would illuminate the colours of the airline of the incoming flight landing at Changi Airport. They would head towards the terminals located at the plane head, where they can customise their messages that would be displayed on the projector screen located at Plane X Interactive Display.

Upon leaving the main pavilion, the visitors that have customised their messages would be able to view their messages on the projector screen, which also serves as a message display board to plane passengers that are arriving in Singapore. In addition to the projector screen, visitors on the ground can interact with the pressure plates located in front of the projector screen. When they step on these plates, the pulse pipes in front of the plates will illuminate and ‘travel’ to the projector screen, where emojis would pop up on the projector screen display.

Our Project Inspiration:

The overall design was inspired by the architectural designs of the following buildings

With these designs in mind, we added our personal twist in them in incorporating our project components for our design concept.

​

The idea of promoting interactions with both visitors on the ground and plane passengers in the sky was mooted by one of our project mates during the previous design phase. The layered element of interaction is novel, and we decided to leverage on these interactions for our project. 

​

In addition, with the technical expertise in coding, we decided to integrate a form of digital element into our project, which turned out to be a functional web application which makes use of live flight data.

 

With the spark of creativity from architecture around the world, the novelty of creating interactions between two distinct groups of site users and the flair in coding a live application, we combined these areas in driving ourselves for the project.

Towards the end of our project, we decided to personalise our project idea with the creation of our project logo which takes after our project name, Plane X Pavilion and symbolises the unique interaction between users on the ground and those in the sky. The colours were taken from the presentation colour scheme chosen of bold gold and cool navy blue to represent our bold idea in establishing novel bonds through GLOW 2.0

Creative Challenge

The major challenge that we encountered was the architectural design.

 

Given our common direction for our site pavilion to resemble an airplane, we had to ensure the design concept could be well appreciated from the perspective of a site visitor and not be overly abstract to easily interpret. Throughout the design process, we did multiple rounds of evaluations by gathering feedback from our peers and modelling the design online, which led to a common agreement being made on the final design.
